Topic: Separation of conglomerate forming enantiomers using continuous crystallization process: A simulation-based study

Introduction: 

Crystallization is a key separation process that is ubiquitous in many chemical industries such as pharmaceutical, food and fine chemical industries. Control of crystal size, shape, polymorphism and enantiomeric form is critical for efficient operation of subsequent downstream processes and bioavailability of the administered drug. This presentation discusses simulation studies of various crystallizer configurations used to separate enantiomers. Simulations are performed by solving population balance equations and associated mass balance equations describing the preferential crystallization process. The effect of various process variables (e.g., seed mass, liquid phase exchange) on productivity and yield will be discussed. Insights gained from this simulation study will assist in the design, development and optimization of such novel crystallization platforms.
